Jesus Is Still the Way, Truth, and Life

Have you ever heard anyone say, “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life”? Do you know what it means? I hope this excerpt from one of my sermons a few years ago can clear things up.

We start with the key verse from John 14.

John 14:6 (NLT)

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

In response to doubt, fear, and hopelessness, Jesus spoke words of reassurance. His words are always meaningful and never lacking. When Jesus speaks, He reveals profound truths that can deliver those who are struggling with doubt, fear, and hopelessness. He provides insight to those who think they can see, only to realize that they are, in fact, blind.

In these few words, we see heaven has come down to raise those who are dead in sin. Jesus is speaking today, saying, I am still the Way, the Truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

“I am”

  1. Jesus’ declaration of “I AM” mirrors the Way God identified Himself when He spoke to Moses through the burning bush. While on earth, Jesus was God’s presence, I AM, in human form. He brought with Him the message of the Kingdom: believe in Him, and you will be saved.
  2. Jesus came to set the enslaved and captives free. No power on earth or in hell can prevent Jesus from liberating those who have faith in Him and come to Him in belief.
  3. To those who are doubtful, fearful, or hopeless, Jesus’ message is clear: do not doubt, fear, or lose hope, for He has come so that you may have life, and have it eternally.
  4. Jesus wants everyone who hears these words today to understand that He is the Way.

Jesus is the Way

  1. JESUS is the doorway and path to God, the God who created the heavens and the earth and will stand to judge all according to what we have done.
  2. JESUS calls you through the narrow gate to eternal life.
  3. JESUS’ life, light, and legacy point to the Kingdom of God. Place your hope in the Way today; you will never be lost.

Hebrews 10:20 (ESV)

20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,

Jesus is the Truth

The world and the devil are full of lies and deception; Jesus has the credentials—crucifixion on the cross and approval from God the Father. He is the one whom the prophet spoke of as the suffering servant. The Lamb of God was sacrificed so his blood would pay for our guilt before God the Father, and it is offered freely to those who believe.

He stands opposed to Satan, who is the Father of lies. Jesus stands as the True Savior of the world. Sinners believe in him and are saved. He directs their path and leads them to Truth that will sets them free. There is only one Truth: Christ, the Savior of the world.

John 1:14 (ESV)

“14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus is the Life

  1. More than just breathing life, but a life hidden in God in Christ. A life that sickness, hardship, or death and the grave cannot steal, but a life set on the foundation of Christ, so that all who believe in his name are forgiven and will live forever.
  2. A life not infested by the tyranny and control of Satan and sin, but a life bought by the blood of Jesus, washed and blameless.
  3. Life that comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Who confess and believe that Jesus is the one whom God sent to save.

1 John 5:11–12 (ESV)

“11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

Application

John 3:16–17 (ESV)

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through him.

The beauty of this verse is that it does not merely confront you. It comforts you. It reminds you that Jesus is still speaking, still saving, and still able to bring people from doubt to faith.

One-Sentence Summary:

Jesus’ declaration in John 14:6 shows that he alone brings believers to the Father, freeing them from fear, doubt, and hopelessness with Truth and life.
